Have you written a book, developed a new product, or have an expertise to share, but you have no idea how to get publicity?
As a former Oprah Show Post Producer and nonfiction author, I get it. I truly do.

You’ve spent months, maybe years, writing a nonfiction book, creating an innovative product, or developing a much-needed service based on your unique expertise. You want to get publicity for your message. But you don’t know how.
No worries. You’re in the right place.
I’m glad you’re here. No doubt, you’ve accomplished a lot. The trouble is though, something is starting to sink in. Your area of expertise and Media – well, they’re worlds apart.
I know – it’s incredibly frustrating. And usually, this is where most people get stuck.
I mean, do any of these sound familiar?
- You have no idea how to get media coverage
- You lack clarity and focus about your core message
- You wouldn’t know what to say if the Media came calling
- You’re scared you’ll make a big mistake on the air
- You don’t know how to build relationships with key media professionals
- You need media tips and strategies that are easy to digest and implement quickly
Your Media Roadmap
You’re not alone. Just about every day I talk with people like you who have important – even life changing – messages to share, but they have no idea how to navigate the confusing media landscape. They seek publicity but they don’t know where to start. They feel lost.
So it occurred to me that to many people, maybe even you – Media is like a foreign country. You don’t know the terrain, you don’t understand the culture, and you don’t speak the language. No wonder you’re lost.
But here’s the thing. I speak Media.
And because I know the landscape, the culture, and the language of Media, I knew I had to create a roadmap to help you get to where you want to be.
Who Am I and Why Should You Listen To Me? I’m Mary O’Donohue, a writer, expert, and speaker, like many of you. But I’m unique in that I also know what day-to-day life is like for people working behind the scenes on major TV shows, because I’ve been one of them. For more than 30 years I’ve worked in media, starting in radio, then local television news, and ultimately working my way up to national programs like Meet the Press, NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, and numerous talk shows, including the incredibly successful, unparalleled leader of them all, The Oprah Winfrey Show, where I spent 12 seasons, the last 8 as a Post Producer.
To say that I know my way around a TV studio, control room or edit room is quite an understatement. I’ve spent more than 3 decades immersed in the culture of top TV shows, working on literally thousands of episodes of programs seen by millions and millions of people. But it never intimidated me. Not once.
Until the day the cameras were turned on me.
I’ve Been In Your Shoes
You see, I’m also an author. Writing a book while working for the Oprah Show and simultaneously raising two children along with my husband, who owned a small business at the time…well, it was a bit hectic to say the least! But when my parenting book, When You Say “Thank You,” Mean It, a month-by-month guide for raising children with extraordinary character was published in 2010, I began to realize I had stepped into a whole new world. With the support of a launch publicist for the first 90 days after my book came out, I did several radio, print, and internet interviews, one of which catapulted my book to best seller status. I’m going to repeat that because it’s so important to emphasize – literally one interview transformed my book into a bestseller.
It wasn’t long before the requests for TV appearances came in. And I don’t mind telling you, I was completely terrified. Like “if I have to go on TV and talk about my book, I’m gonna throw up” terrified.
My “Behind the Scenes” Advantage
I truly wanted to share the message of my book, so I had to leap way out of my comfort zone, and embrace the role of parenting expert in the media. Once I began doing on camera interviews, I naturally started using my behind the scenes media experience. It’s just a part of me. I didn’t even have to think about it. It helped me embrace life as an “expert” in front of the camera. I began to handle interviews my publicist set up with ease and confidence. I knew what reporters and producers were looking for in terms of compelling stories and sound bites. I started to craft emails to producers in such a way that I was the one controlling my message.
And when the launch period was over, and the Oprah show wrapped up production, I used my behind the scenes experience to pitch myself to national media, landing the cover story in Parents Magazine – without a publicist. And I realized that because I am fluent in the language of “media,” I had a huge advantage that other authors, experts, entrepreneurs, speakers, and small business owners seeking publicity simply didn’t have.
I’m a one-of-a-kind media coach who’s worked behind the scenes on major national TV shows, written a non-fiction book, and then done interviews on the other side of camera. I have something unique to offer to those who want to get their own messages into media but don’t know where to begin.
In my career, I’ve been fortunate to have a few people who guided me along the way, teaching me the key things I needed to move forward. Mentors.
They’re the ones who’ve been where you want to be. They’ve traveled the road before you, and they know the insider tips and insights that are crucial to get you to the next level. And it occurred to me that that’s exactly what you need.
You Need a Media Mentor
